Windermere Garden Club, Inc.

ABOUT US

Windermere Garden Club, Inc. was formally founded in 1956 for the purpose of enhancing the beauty of the quaint town of Windermere, promoting conservation, and educating people about gardening.

The Club can trace its origin back to an early civic club that formed in 1919 from a group of women who met during World War I to roll bandages for soldiers. Though the club has had numerous name changes over the decades, including the Women’s Club and eventually Windermere Garden Club, the impetus to help make Windermere a vibrant, beautiful community has remained constant.

When the town needed a central meeting place, the group donated its club house building, now known as Town Hall. They worked to beautify public spaces by tending the town’s gardens and planting oaks along Main Street.

During the mid-20th century, as Windermere faced growth pressures, the Garden Club pushed to preserve its natural charm. They advocated for tree conservation and resisted overdevelopment, keeping the town’s character intact. Over the decades, their legacy has endured as witnessed by the well-kept parks and shaded streets residents and visitors enjoy today.

Currently, the club is thriving raising scholarships for area students and providing an outlet for adults who want to learn about gardening and conservation. Members remain active in guiding the town by donating their time to serve on numerous committees and boards.

In 2025, Windermere Garden Club, Inc. received non-profit status from the Federal government and became an incorporated Florida non-profit organization, making it eligible to receive charitable donations.
