MONTHLY GARDEN ACTIVITIES

January in the Garden

  • Prune non-spring flowering shrubs and trees to improve form. Do not prune azaleas. Doing so now will cut off this spring’s buds.
  • Maintain crape myrtles by removing seed pods, small twiggy growth, and crossed branches. Hard pruning by lopping off all branches, a.k.a. “crape murder,” is not good practice and will ultimately cause unsightly “knuckles” to form.
  • Plant Herbs such as chives, coriander, fennel, garlic, ginger, lavender, mint, oregano, parsley, rosemary, sage, thyme.
  • Plant bulbs such as African iris, Asiatic lilies, amaryllis, crinum, day lilies, and spider lilies.
  • January is a dry month so replenish mulch to retain moisture.
