    February in the Garden

    • Cover tender plants if frost or freeze is predicted.
    • Plant bulbs.
    • Many warm and cool season vegetables can be planted this month.
    • Prune roses, fertilize, and apply mulch.
    • Apply a pre-emergent weed killer to the lawn. Don’t use a “weed and feed” product.
    • Late in February/early March, prune hibiscus by one-third to one-half to promote bushy growth.

    January in the Garden

    • Prune non-spring flowering shrubs and trees to improve form. Do not prune azaleas. Doing so now will cut off this spring’s buds.
    • Maintain crape myrtles by removing seed pods, small twiggy growth, and crossed branches. Hard pruning by lopping off all branches, a.k.a. “crape murder,” is not good practice and will ultimately cause unsightly “knuckles” to form.
    • Plant Herbs such as chives, coriander, fennel, garlic, ginger, lavender, mint, oregano, parsley, rosemary, sage, thyme.
    • Plant bulbs such as African iris, Asiatic lilies, amaryllis, crinum, day lilies, and spider lilies.
    • January is a dry month so replenish mulch to retain moisture.
