WHAT´S NEW

When to Prune Cold-Damaged Plants

Ugly though dead foliage may be, wait until mid-February or March to prune frost-damaged plants. Dead foliage protects the plant from further damage while pruning before all danger of frost has passed may prematurely trigger new growth.

Water on warm days to help plants recover.

Don’t fertilize until plants show new growth later in the spring.

Collapsed plants that have turned to mush should be removed to prevent rot.

When new growth appears, prune to healthy green wood just above new, emerging growth.

If no new growth appears by late spring, the plant is probably dead and should be removed.

February in the Garden

  • Cover tender plants if frost or freeze is predicted.
  • Plant bulbs.
  • Many warm and cool season vegetables can be planted this month.
  • Prune roses, fertilize, and apply mulch.
  • Apply a pre-emergent weed killer to the lawn. Don’t use a “weed and feed” product.
  • Late in February/early March, prune hibiscus by one-third to one-half to promote bushy growth.

community Projects

We have a long history of community service, tracing back to our founding mothers in 1919 who met to roll bandages for World War I soldiers.

Today, in addition to our scholarship programs, we assist with garden at the Town of Windermere flagpole, help maintain a teaching garden at Windermere Elementary School, provide weekly lobby flowers for the Town’s administrative offices, deliver monthly floral arrangements to hospice patients, and decorate the Town Hall holiday tree. Several of our members serve on important Town committees such as the Tree Board.
