Garden Club Donates Funds to Local Conservation Education Groups Three area charities that support conservation and environmental education were selected this spring to receive grants from the Windermere Garden Club. They are: Oakland Nature Preserve to assist toward their goal of achieving a $10,000 matching grant in support of their environmental education programs; Orange Audubon Society toward their nature center building project at Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive; Wekiva Youth Camp to purchase a protective floor covering to be used in the crafts building. The camp is a non-profit residential nature camp sponsored by the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs for children in grades 3-8. |
Club Celebrates America 250 by Creating Red, White, and Blue Garden at Veteran's Memorial Windermere Garden Club, Inc. honored America’s 250th anniversary by planting a red, white, and blue garden at the Veteran’s Memorial in front of Town Hall. The project was made possible through a $1,000 grant from the Plant America Blue & Gold Star Memorial Beautification Program, a joint initiative of the National Garden Club, Inc. and Keep America Beautiful. About 15 Club members worked over three days to remove under-performing bushes, re-grade the bed and then plant red caladiums, white hostas, blue agapanthus, blue daze, red camelias, red and white pentas and white zinnias. Because many of these are perennials that will grow and come back each year the garden will flourish for years to come. |

July in the Garden Follow fertilizer and watering restrictions as established by your county. Some areas prohibit the application of fertilizer to lawns and landscape plants between June and September. This helps prevent fertilizer runoff pollution from contaminating Florida’s waterways. Water lawn and garden on your assigned days only when needed. Turn the automatic sprinkler system off to prevent overwatering and wasting water. Don't prune azaleas after mid-month. Doing so will remove next spring's flowers. Plan fall vegetable garden. Start seeds indoors or in protected areas shielded from afternoon sun.  |

Garden Club Wins Two State Awards
Windermere Garden Club was honored with two state awards, one for historic decoration and preservation and one for community service at the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs annual convention in April. The Club’s interpretation of a 1925 Christmas tree at Town Hall as part of the town of Windermere 100th anniversary celebration won in the category of Historic Decorations and Preservation. The tree featured battery-operated candles, bead garlands, and gold ornaments that were typical of the era. The topper was a custom-made version of the Town’s 100thanniversary logo. Decorated by club members as part of their community service commitment, the tree was on display through the month of December and was featured in the Town’s holiday festivities. A long-standing club project, providing floral arrangements each week at the city offices, won in the category of Community Service Design. Club members volunteer to provide an arrangement or live plant to brighten the lobby of the city’s administrative offices and police headquarters. The “lobby flowers” program has been a continuous service project of Windermere Garden Club since 1980 with floral arrangements and live plants displayed at various locations through the years from the post office to the library, to city offices. |
