Garden Club Donates Funds to Local Conservation Education Groups

Three area charities that support conservation and environmental education were selected this spring to receive grants from the Windermere Garden Club. They are:

Oakland Nature Preserve to assist toward their goal of achieving a $10,000 matching grant in support of their environmental education programs;

Orange Audubon Society toward their nature center building project at Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive;

Wekiva Youth Camp to purchase a protective floor covering to be used in the crafts building. The camp is a non-profit residential nature camp sponsored by the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs for children in grades 3-8.

Congratulations to Member Ceme Curley!

Ceme's horticulture entry in the Flower Show at the FFGC State Convention held in Kissimmee in April won not only a First Place in the horticulture division, but the top "Grower's Choice Flower Show Award."

In addition, she won an honorable mention in floral design and was the designer of a lobby display.

Art In Bloom Field Trip

In April, Members and guests enjoyed Art in Bloom at the Orlando Museum of Art, including the chance to admire the floral design work of two members, Arjuna Dusherla and Shirin Nurani, as they interpreted artist Doris Marie Leeper's Split Square Series. Their design was entitled, Not So Square

Club Celebrates 70 Years

In keeping with the historic theme, members celebrated the club's 70th anniversary with a special program and made May Baskets, a popular and much-anticipated rite of spring that had been celebrated on May 1 for centuries past.

June in the Garden

June ushers in Central Florida’s hot summer months and rainy season.

Follow fertilizer and watering restrictions as established by your county. Some areas prohibit the application of fertilizer to lawns and landscape plants between June and September. This helps prevent fertilizer runoff pollution from contaminating Florida’s waterways.

Water lawn and garden on your assigned days only when needed. Turn the automatic sprinkler system off to prevent overwatering and wasting water.

Lightly prune azaleas, hibiscus, oleander, and crape myrtle.

It is too late to plant tomatoes.

Do plant basil, Mexican tarragon, and rosemary. Pinch back established plants to encourage a bushy shape and prevent flowering.

It is too hot to start many flowering annuals.

It is a good time to plant palms.

Windermere 100th Anniversary Christmas Tree

 Garden Club Wins  Two State Awards

Windermere Garden Club was honored with two state awards, one for historic decoration and preservation and one for community service at the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs annual convention in April.

The Club’s interpretation of a 1925 Christmas tree at Town Hall as part of the town of Windermere 100th anniversary celebration won in the category of Historic Decorations and Preservation. The tree featured battery-operated candles, bead garlands, and gold ornaments that were typical of the era. The topper was a custom-made version of the Town’s 100thanniversary logo. Decorated by club members as part of their community service commitment, the tree was on display through the month of December and was featured in the Town’s holiday festivities.

A long-standing club project, providing floral arrangements each week at the city offices, won in the category of Community Service Design. Club members volunteer to provide an arrangement or live plant to brighten the lobby of the city’s administrative offices and police headquarters. The “lobby flowers” program has been a continuous service project of Windermere Garden Club since 1980 with floral arrangements and live plants displayed at various locations through the years from the post office to the library, to city offices.

fundraisers

Our fundraisers bring the community together while supporting our mission through fun, seasonal events.

Throughout the year, we host engaging activities that offer something for everyone — from friendly games and raffles to unique sales and community-centered gatherings.

These events not only raise essential funds but also create opportunities to connect, share, and celebrate our community.
